Music Makes Man

Here is a play, or shall i say guidelines for a play, that makes it entirely dependent on who you are as the actor.

A play that took place in a studio with a selected music type and playlist which always played in the background of the piece. The idea for this piece is to have a play that the actor performs this with his/her own selection of music playing in the background matching the volume of the actors voice. This means that the play is entirely individual due to the taste of the music that is put forward.

Opening Example

- I have never been so lucky then I am now. I have never been in so much peace with myself other then now. Settling into my own mind with things that bother me, ot being so overpowering as they used to be. Many things lead me into this position but nothing has effected me more greatly then her

Song: Answers by Puppet, Koo

Every person has their own taste in music allowing for the individual to customize the flavor of the piece depending on how/what they want to talk about, furthermore music is the best catalyst for empathy and sympathy. By listening to the music alongside the actors dialogue it allows for the audience to get a much closer relationship to the actor and what emotions they are experience, like the melancholy feel you get from certain music.

Guidelines the actor must follow:

- It must be based of personal experience and emotions

- You can put a character on in order to mask your identity

- Must be done in either thrust or the round

- Music must have a personal importance to you

- Music must reflect the emotions that are being felt by the actor

- Music must reflect emotions that are being fed through dialogue

- There is no time limit so piece can be as short or as long as you want it depends on the individual performing

- You pick the music before writing the dialogue

Questions to be taken into account when picking music:

- When did u first find this song? What place in life where you when discovering this song?

- Do you want a live band or recording or music video? Why?

- How does this song make you feel?

- What do you do when you listen to this song?

- What is the name of the playlist this song is on?

- Can you sing this song? Try

- Can you dance to this song? Dance to it, express yourself then dance with someone else to it

- What does it sound like in a big room?

- What does it sound like with headphones on with loudest volume? Now the quietest volume?

- Are you proud of your music taste? Why?

Questions whilst writing the dialogue:

- Can you improvise the dialogue?

- Where does this dialogue come from?

- Why did you feel like this when saying it?

- How does it match the music?

- What words come to you whilst listening to each song?

- Can someone read it back to you in the same way you read it? (no one should do it the way you want it) How does it make you feel?

- Are you yourself saying this?

- Can you cry? Can you smile? Why?

This is a great idea. You need to get it performed. And filmed. The out on YouTube. Really interesting examination of the interaction between the performer as a person and the performer as an improvisor
