Improvising a lecture on Improvisation

Updated: Nov 27, 2018

Here is another idea following a 'Lecture on being Late for a Lecture'. I got this idea of performing a lecture on improvisation where it is entirely improvised. Doing this i was advised to write rules for the actor performing this piece. Have a go at it!

Improvisation Lecture

This lecture will be entirely improvised thus to demonstrate and explain improvisation, however there are a few rules the actor must follow:

- He/She may only talk for 5 mins

- He/She must come into contact with the audience 3 times

- He/She Must have a demonstration involving a audience member

- Cannot leave the topic of theatre and improvisation

- Must refer to how each original piece of art derives from improvisation

- Vocally must be energetic

- The character you are improvising is a gunning early 20’s theatre maker who has a passion for pushing the boundaries of theatre – You cannot plan the character any more then this

- You cannot say improvisation more than 3 times

- Make the audience engaged

To do before the performance:

- Improvise a monologue beforehand about love

- Improvise a Duologue beforehand about passion

- You are not allowed to plan out your dialogue beforehand!

- Record yourself doing a improvisation on the subject of hope then watch yourself. Are you entertained or attentive?

Questions to ask yourself:

- What does improvisation mean to you as the actor?

- Is theatre just a heightened version of realty?

- Does improvisation depend on you being a intellect or a emotional? Introvert or extrovert? Lonely or popular?

- Can you act every type of theatre but improvised?

- How good is your knowledge on improvising?

- I ask you to stand up and improvise a character, then a scenario, then a theme and then a setting, can you do it? How well?

- How do u get to these points at which you can perform?

- How do you develop your character without any context?

There are only a few rules for the actor playing this lecturer. They key point of this is to have a performance where it is a lecture about improvisation which is being improvised. It is highly important that the actor playing this researches improvisation and methods in that area.
