Hamilton Review

Hamilton: The rap heavy style once again is used to appeal to younger audiences. With a serious topic being discussed how does rap and pop music help the audience

The piece is exploring a topic which to the large population of youth is unknown, or at least, there is a lack luster amount of knowledge to them – ‘One that tells the story of forgotten American Founding Father Alexander Hamilton and his ascent out of poverty and to power against the backdrop of the American War of Independence.’ - Who or what is Hamilton? An ignorant Brit’s guide to the hit musical by Alice Vincent for the Telegraph

This is significant because of the rather dull subject matter is off putting for most people and therefor the creater Lin-Manuel Miranda had to find a way to create a entertaining piece of educational theatre.

The use of these two styles is significant as it utilizes music which people are very familiar with, furthermore it is also music which si associated with colored people, which is important to note following the tribulations Hamilton went through in ragrds to casting in color.

As we are about to see in a interview with Lin Manuel-Miranda we see that there was a large personal inspiration to use rap as a emotive style of music.

Songs about Hamilton’s complicated love life get more of a Destiny’s Child treatment, and the rest of the score is expansive enough to include torchy show tunes, high-camp Brit pop and nods to hip-hop classics (from “The Message” to “Empire State of Mind” to “Lose Yourself”). The sheer virtuosity of Miranda’s songwriting has prompted an insane who’s who of music legends (hip-hop and otherwise) to catch a performance, including Jay Z and Beyoncé, Eminem, Paul McCartney, Madonna, Nas, David Byrne, Q-Tip, RZA, “Weird Al” Yankovic, Jon Bon Jovi, Busta Rhymes
