Encountering Theatre - Week 7

Semiotics - the study of signs and symbols and their use or interpretation.

Performance as a Text

- Author

- Spectator

- Meaning Is created in between the two

Twelfth Night (young Vic)

- Dancing around

- Nottinghill carnival

- Carribean based carnival

- As a musical based piece the choreography could be seen as a semiotic device as many routines have signs and symbolism. The enlightening movements and happy vibe gaged from a large proportion of the music allowed for the symbolism of the dance to be very strong

The Semiotics and Signs of Streetcar Named Desire

The piece I saw was performed by an amateur acting group in Chichester. This play is renowned for its use of plastic theatre and thus the use of semiotics and signs. The deliberate use of Tennessee Williams’ ideas on utilizing signs and objects on stage is very important and, in the performance, I saw there was a deliberate attempt to utilize these ideas. The most prominent use of signs was of the blue horn on the stage which was constantly on stage and depending on the mood of the scene would depend on how hidden it is. We saw in the rape scene of Blanche by Stanley the blue horn was Centre stage. Yet when Blanche and Mitch the blue horn was hidden in the background of the scene. This clever utilization of the horn gave an indication of moments which caused damage to mental state of Blanche and led right up with the final scene where blanche is taken away due to her final fall into madness.

The use of semiotics and signs are so essential in this play as it creates mood as stated but also defines character, as seen in the opening scene, we see Stanley enter carrying meat and in a white top this shows the stereotypical representation of men of this era. The use of semiotics in this sense is to give the sense of representation of certain people and collectives thus make many people immediately categorize this person type.
